Selective Service-
The selective service act was passed and every 18 year old male had to register for the draft. The Selective Service Act was passed because President Wilson wanted the size of the U.S. army to grow and so on May of 1917 the act was passed. Every man who signed up for the draft was assigned a number and if that number was pulled from the jar, those men became the very first draftees. Over 24 million Americans registered and only 2.8 million were drafted.
Bernard Baruch &WIB(War Industries Board)-
As America entered the war, industries had to change what they produced for the war effort. Now, American industries were told to make rifles, ammunition, or produce certain foods. Bernard Baruch & WIB were agencies that would be the ones to determine what industries made what products. Baruch set high prices for wheat and other foods to give farmers the incentive to grow these foods for increased production. He was also the one who urged Americans to save food for the soldiers.
George Creel & Committee Public Information(CPI)-
Going into the war, many Americans wondered why we were in the war and had no understanding for the reason behind it.The CPI was responsible for this and George Creel was the director of the CPI. George Creel and the CPI went around America persuading and selling America on the reason behind the war and why we should support it. They went all around America giving lectures and at the end of it, he created widespread support from the Americans towards the war.
Conscientious Objectors-
The conscientious objectors were against violence and the war. They were people who were completely against violence and the war, and if they were drafted they tried to not put them on the front lines, because they would not want to work to help the allies or America. They could be drafted but often rejected it.
Espionage Act-
The Espionage Act was passed so that postal authorities could ban disloyal materials from the mail that could interfere with the war effort. Anyone who was interfering could be charged a $10,00 fine and sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment. All of these disloyal acts were taken into consideration to see if they violated any of the penalties.
Sedition Act-
The Sedition Act said that Americans could not use disloyal language about the American Government, or military during a war. It limited the freedom of Americans freedom of speech. If Americans violated the act or something unlawful was said, they could be sentenced to prison.
The Great Migration-
As men left to fight in the war, jobs opened up in the north. African- Americans moved north for industrial jobs and that left jobs opened in the South. Mexican-Americans moved into the African-Americans places and there were southwest agricultural jobs for the Mexican-Americans.Hispanic Neighborhoods called Barrios were established and many families were there seasonally or stayed in the U.S. The African-Americans helped to fulfill the needs war. The Great Migration was one of the most important occurrences in African-American history.
